When a Book Connects Africa and Greenland

As part of the North Greenland Windsled Expedition 2026, we also wanted to highlight a remarkable work that, more than forty years after its publication, continues to build unexpected bridges between continents: An African in Greenland by Tété-Michel Kpomassie.

This extraordinary travel memoir tells the story of a young man from Togo who set out to discover Greenland and the Inuit people, challenging conventional narratives of exploration. It offers a rare and inspiring perspective—one in which Africa looks toward the Arctic with curiosity, openness, and genuine humanity.

As part of B-FROST’s educational outreach linked to NGWE2026, we were delighted to present a copy of the book to Nina Klu, a student at the University of Lomé, and Aménuvévé Yovo, a student at La Source High School in Lomé.

Through their eyes, a new generation has the opportunity to engage with this remarkable story, reflect on the connections between cultures, remote environments, and today’s climate challenges, and perhaps imagine new bridges between Africa and Greenland.

Because exploration is not only about geography. It is also about perspectives, stories, and the transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next.
